AI for Non-Technical Founders: A Practical Starting Guide

The decisions a business owner can make before selecting tools or commissioning an AI solution.

Key takeaways

  • Describe the outcome and workflow in plain language.
  • Ask for evidence, costs and operating responsibilities.
  • Build team capability alongside the pilot.

Write a business brief

Choose a recurring task and explain what good work looks like. Identify who performs it, who receives the output and what goes wrong today.

You do not need to specify a model architecture to describe a useful problem. Bring examples of real work, constraints and quality expectations to a supplier conversation.

Learn the distinctions that affect the decision

Ask whether the task needs fixed automation, generated drafts or predictions from historical data. Each approach has different inputs and checking requirements.

Our guide to AI, machine learning and automation explains these choices. Compare a simpler process change before commissioning custom development.

Request a limited demonstration

Use approved representative examples and include a difficult case. Ask what happened behind the scenes, which steps remain manual and how the system behaves when information is missing.

For an illustrative follow-up assistant, check names and commitments against the meeting brief. Measure preparation and review together.

Understand what ownership involves

Ask about data handling, subscriptions, access, maintenance and exit. Give someone inside the business responsibility for the workflow rather than relying entirely on a supplier.

Use the AI supplier checklist. IMDA’s AI resources are another starting point for Singapore enterprises.

Build a learning and review plan

Give staff time to practise and clear rules for checking outputs. Set success criteria and a review date before expanding.

Follow the SME AI adoption guide and connect the pilot with team capability development.
